When it comes to habits, what you don’t do is just as important as what you do.

Sometimes we have habits that we need to break in order to improve our lives. And sometimes there are habits we should adopt that will make our lives better and even more successful.

In this post we will talk about three habits you should break and then five habits you should start making a part of your daily life.

It may come as a surprise, but sometimes breaking bad habits will be more than sufficient to improve your life. Although a list of possible habits to break would be too numerous for me to list here, below are some common habits you may want to start with.

Remember to analyze your own life. Look and see where there needs to be improvement. It may be in your personal life, with your self-care, or at work. Then do what it takes to break those habits that are holding you back from being happy and successful.

Not Planning Your Day

Daily routines really are a big deal. If you don’t have a plan, chances are you drift throughout the day aimlessly doing whatever you happen to think of or come across. While you might get some tasks done, chances are you could have accomplished much more.

To move forward in your life in a positive and successful way, you need both routine and structure. Having goals and a plan gives you that routine and structure.

Set up blocks of time and plan out your day so there is little left to chance. You will be surprised at how much more smoothly your day will go. And as a bonus you will get more done.

Using a planner is a smart choice. You can record what needs to be done, what was done, and even keep lists and routines in there. It is a good way to be productive.

Stop Multitasking

We live in a world where too many people are trying to multitask. They actually believe they are getting more done. In reality, your concentration decreases and the quality of your work decreases when you don’t focus on one task at a time.

Choose the tasks that allow you to move the needle forward with the goals you have set for yourself first. Once you have completed those tasks move on to the next.

Planning your daily tasks in advance as I said above will help keep you focused. It will also keep you from working on things that are not really all that beneficial for your goals you set.

Consuming Too Much News

There is no problems with staying up-to-date with current events. However, watching too much or putting too much thought into what you are hearing is not healthy for your mind.

It is almost impossible to get the news these days and just get the facts. So many people consume the news on tv, social media, magazines, and even through word of mouth.

But guess what, the truth of the matter is that your life can be productive, healthy, and even peaceful without one iota of news. Instead, read a good book, and feed your mind with knowledge that will elevate your mind and your mood.

If you are one that must watch at least some news, save it for later in the day, and limit how long and how much you consume.

Habits To Make

There are many habits that successful people will swear by. And just as above the list of habits to start making could be too numerous.

However. there are some crucial habits that are common among successful and happy people that you should consider starting.

Get Enough Sleep

Most people will say you need 8 hours of undisturbed sleep to be productive. Others will say you have to wake up at the crack of down to be successful. Some even say bed by 10pm.

Maybe those statements do work for some people and that’s great. But the problem with those statements is they don’t really pertain to everyone.

You see, everyone’s circadian rhythms are different. Some people perform better late at night and some perform better early in the day.

One person may have a better day when they get just six hours of sleep, whereas another person may require nine hours to function successfully.

What holds true though, for most people, is getting the same amount of sleep each night. Also, going to be and waking up at the same times daily.

Decide the best times for you and make it a routine.

Eat Healthy and Stay Hydrated

Just as with your car, the cleaner the fuel, the more optimally you will function. If you clog up your system with junk, you will feel sluggish, just like adding bad gas to your car.

Not eating healthy causes you to feel sluggish throughout the day. Your energy level will be low. And your concentration will start lacking.

Instead, eat what is healthy and required for your body. Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, throughout the day.

Get Enough Exercise

Your body needs movement each day. The habit of exercising daily feeds the body with that movement.

Pounding out the treadmills and lifting weights may not be for you. that’s okay. Just pick the activities that you enjoy instead.

Here are some suggestions to try:

  • Walking
  • Cycling
  • Swimming
  • Dancing
  • Kickboxing
  • Yoga
  • Running
  • Pilates

As long as you elevate your heart rate, burn some calories, break a sweat and improve your blood circulation for at least 30 minutes a day you are off to a great start.

Journaling

I am a huge advocate of writing your thoughts on paper. It clears the mind and gets it out of your head.

Journaling is simple and there are so many types of journaling you can start. From a daily entry in a notebook to keeping a gratitude journal, there is a style of journaling for everyone.

The best part of journaling is that it is personal and is a great way to express any thoughts or feeling you may have. Go and get yourself a nice journal and start writing.

Read Regularly

Feeding your mind with useful knowledge that broadens it will help you immensely on your journey towards a successful life. Most people that are highly successful will tell you they read a lot.

Now the goal of reading means reading good books and articles, not newspapers, gossip magazines or any other trivial and negative sources of information. Fill your mind with knowledge and positivity instead.

Keep a book journal to track the books you have read and the one’s you want to read.
